Distinctions: Dr. John A. Fernandez is a prodigy. Raised in Detroit and Troy, Michigan, he overcame a life-challenging childhood mobility impairment, was accepted into Harvard University in the 10th grade yet chose from among 60 college offers to complete a pre-law degree and became an athlete. A successful marathoner, Dr. Fernandez earned his Juris Doctorate at the New England College of Law in Boston. He returned to Detroit to serve the community becoming the first incumbent to the position of Senior Administrative Law Advocate in the only child advocacy program of its kind, serving with advocacy and education professionals trained at universities including Harvard, Yale, Oxford, University of Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Washington, D.C. colleges and universities. He participated in forming the first full-service law office for children and their families in the Detroit area serving thousands of youth and families through Wayne County Neighborhood Legal Services Child & Family Advocacy Center. He protected the rights of families and students in due process hearings under the Individuals with Disabilities in Education Act and hearing before state and federal tribunals.
